Biographical Sketch

Jean Ray Laury was born on March 22, 1928, in Doon, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph Ray, an electrician and Alice Ray, a teacher.  In 1952 she married Frank B. Laury, a professor at California State University, Fresno.  They had two children together, Tom and Lizabeth Laury.  They live in the foothills of the California Sierras.

In 1950 Jean Ray Laury got a bachelor's degree in art and English from the University of Northern Iowa.  She earned a master's degree in design at Stanford and it was at Stanford that her love for quilting blossomed.  Her first quilt was part of a project for her master’s degree. Since then Laury has become a well known and respected member of the quilting community.

Scope and Content

The Jean Ray Laury Papers contain an inscribed copy of one of her books, sketches, original artwork, paste-ups, cover designs, a set of postcards, and other materials accumulated by Jean Ray Laury. Laury’s papers were created from her work on four picture books for children. The material is organized into two series: Books and Miscellaneous.

A majority of the materials were not dated. Material for each title was placed in chronological order as surmised by the level of development of the material.

The material in the Books Series includes an inscribed copy of her book Sunbonnet Sue Goes to the Quilt Show, sketches, original artwork, cover design, paper cutout art, and other material relating to four titles written by Jean Ray Laury. It is arranged chronologically by title and within each title the materials are arranged chronologically.

The material in the Miscellaneous Series includes a set of postcards designed by Jean Ray Laury.
